I was rather disappointed in this book. It was boring right at the beginning and did not improve. Having ancestors who helped settle Kansas, it was not what I expected it to be - interesting stories of Kansas pioneer days. I did not read beyond the first 2 chapters. I did browse through it for signs of improvement later in the book, but I didn't see any promises of improvement. I do not feel that the LOOK INSIDE feature gave a true over-view of the book. If I could have read beyond the title, copy write, and the critic reviews, I would not have purchased this book.

Definitely of interest for anyone looking for info on early years of Kansas life. Richard mentions plenty of events during the Civil War I hadn't heard of before around Lawrence. Some info on how they lived--which I had expected more of, but overall, nicely done.
One of the dullest books I have accessed on . It seems to be nothing but an account of missionary actiivitis.
It took me a short while to get into this book since the author was part of the Christian movement that went West to spread the good word. However, I was glad I continued reading because it was a detailed picture of the lives and times that made these stalwart people the true Kansans that they became.
The stoic endurance and fortitude required to survive and endure through all that beset them, from severe weather to horrific physical violence, reveals them as people of determination and guts. When I finished reading this book I felt I had read something that gave me a guide to 'middle America' and a better understanding of what that means.
Well worth reading if you are interested in the development of the United States.
I enjoy true western history ot the United States especially when it comes from diaries or journals, however in this case, unless you are interested in the growth of the growth of strict Protestantism in early Lawrence Kansas, I am afraid this book will be a bit boring. I did learn of the growth of early Kansas and the violent state struggle between slave and free, which was a nice supplement.
Because some of my ancestors lived in Kansas many years ago, and I have lived there from time to time, I found the book interesting. Anyone who is interested in what life in those times and under those circumstances should develop a real understanding of their need to succeed, and the difficulties encountered in that time. I have to say that in my experience of living in various parts of the western states, I found Kansans to be so friendly and kind and very "down to earth" people.
A great account of travel and the founding of eastern Kansas towns. Ministers were sent out from seminaries to establish churches and colleges in the free state. This account details a firsthand eyewitness to Quantrills Raid (detailed as a massacre). Even though I was born and raised in the city of Kansas City, Kansas, I did not know it was originally the towns of Quindaro, Wyandotte, and Kansas City,Kansas. I did know of the history of the Underground Railroad operating there. The author, one of the sent ministers harbor end on of the runaway slaves. This book is a historic gem. It shows the difficulties of pioneer life and the triumph of seeing the fruit of hard labor.
Excellent first-hand account of frontier Kansas. Places Kansas as a swing state in the free state vs slave state controversy prior to the Civil War, which the author terms 'the rebellion'. The narrative, first-hand again, of the bloody Quantrell raid and massacre of Lawrence is chilling. It is hard to believe how cruel the outcroppings of war are on ordinary people who just happen to be living in an ill-fated location---the wrong place at the wrong time. Hard to believe that afterwards they go on living and recovering, but they do and did. Very fine account of tragedy and hope.

Truly a great book to buy and read for frontier history and for understanding how incredibly strong our ancestors were.
